The Top 5 Resolutions & The Intentions They Inspire

Can you believe 2019 is here?! At the beginning of each year, we often get swept up into the "New Year, New Me" mentality resetting our goals and resolutions for the upcoming year. We establish a clean slate and put forth resolutions to achieve, but our excitement and goals fizzle out as life becomes busy. So what can we do to keep us on track? Set an  intention instead of a resolution! Creating an intention will support your yearly goals because an intention is the reason why you are pursuing these goals.

With every goal and resolution, ask yourself - Why do you want to achieve this goal? What would accomplishing this goal mean to you? What WORD will help you accomplish the goal especially when you are feel unmotivated? Your WORD grounds you and acts as a simple reminder of your WHY to help you refocus on your goal.

As you set your New Year’s Resolutions, we wanted to share some examples of how you can create an intention in order to keep those resolutions!

These are the top 5 resolutions made every year:

  1. I want to be healthier.
  2. I want to practice self-care.
  3. I want to save up for a vacation.
  4. I want to read 1 new book a month.
  5. I want to learn a new skill or hobby.

Resolution: "I want to be healthier"

Whether it’s losing weight or getting fit, one of the most difficult parts to this goal is having the discipline to keep going. Maybe choosing to be healthier is also choosing to make the difficult choices that will make you feel better in the long run. There are so many different roads to health, and everywhere you look there is a new method, study, or expert telling us the "right way" to do things. Before getting caught up in "how" to do it, first ask yourself "why" you want to be healthier?

- Is Your WORD: ENERGY? Do you wish to have ENERGY to spend with your loved ones? Is it important for you to feel energized at the end of each day?
-Is Your WORD: LIMITLESS? Maybe you want to sign up for a 10K run to prove to yourself that you're LIMITLESS?

Resolution: "I want to practice self-care"

In our world today, we are constantly “plugged in.” We are bombarded with so many images of other people’s lives and who we “should be.” Sometimes the best medicine is to slow down, reflect, and do you. Why do you want to cultivate your own self care habits?

- Is Your WORD: ENOUGH? Is practicing self-care a good reminder that YOU ARE ENOUGH?
-Is Your WORD: COMPASSION? Do you want to show yourself COMPASSION when there is a huge pile of things to do and expectations to meet?
- Is Your WORD: BALANCE? Is it about finding time to unplug and finding a little bit of BALANCE?


Resolution: "I want to save up for a vacation"

Finances are a tricky topic, especially when it comes to saving up for a big reward. Spending money gives us that temporary thrill of getting a treat, but can ultimately leave us wanting more. Saving money isn’t always fun, but a reminder of why you want to save for your next getaway may help you achieve your goal.

- Is Your WORD: ADVENTURE? Will holding the intention of ADVENTURE help you stay on the path of saving up money especially when buying a new item is just within reach?
- Is Your WORD: EXPERIENCE? Is it about collecting new EXPERIENCEs this year?

Resolution: "I want to read 1 new book a month"

One of the best ways to travel through time or space, to get a glimpse into the lives of our idols, or to learn about ourselves: books. Why do you want to read more books?

- Is Your WORD: EXPLORE? Do you want to EXPLORE the minds of other people? To be able to live in a different place or time, or to dive into a fantasy land that's a complete escape from your everyday?
- Is Your WORD: CALM? Are you looking for CALM and quiet with your book after a long day?

Resolution: "I want to learn a new skill or hobby"

Learning a new skill is fun! It's exciting, different and it brings joy. Sometimes we want to try new things so we can do it with a friend. Sometimes it's because it's something we've always wanted to try, but there was never time or opportunity. This journey is not without it's difficult moments, why do you want embark on this new journey?

- Is your WORD: PURPOSE? Do you wish to learn a new skill, or build upon one that you already have, in order to fulfill your greater PURPOSE?
-Is Your WORD: CURIOSITY? Does CURIOSITY drive why you want to learn something new?
-Is Your WORD: DISCOVER? Is it about DISCOVERING new things?
